'Himalayan Tourism' is a quarterly online magazine (ISSN: 3049-1223) published by the Centre for Mountain Tourism & Hospitality Studies, Hemvati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University (HNBGU). The magazine delves into the diverse facets of tourism and allied sectors within the Himalayan region, offering a holistic platform for national and international audiences.
Each edition explores unique perspectives on tourism, hospitality, and sustainable development in the mountains. About University
Hemvati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University (HNBGU) was established as a State University in November 1973, born out of a movement reflecting the aspirations of the Garhwal region's people. This movement aimed to overcome economic and social backwardness and empower future generations through higher education. Located in the historic town of Srinagar, Garhwal, the University has contributed significantly to regional development and the preservation of cultural identity. In January 2009, HNBGU was converted into a Central University under the Central Universities Act, taking on the responsibility to foster academic excellence and holistic student development. The University serves not only the local population but also attracts students from across India. Nestled in the Himalayan region, HNBGU is a residential and affiliating institution with three campuses—Birla/Chauras Campus in Srinagar, BGR Campus in Pauri, and SRT Campus in Tehri. It offers Diploma, Undergraduate, Postgraduate, and Doctoral programs across various disciplines, including regionally significant courses that address the unique needs of mountainous areas. HNBGU also affiliates with more than 120 colleges, extending its reach and educational impact throughout the Uttarakhand.
About Centre
The Centre for Mountain Tourism & Hospitality Studies, was established in 1976 as the Department of Tourism and was renamed in 2001 to reflect its expanded vision and commitment to excellence in tourism and hospitality education. As part of the School of Management at H.N.B. Garhwal Central University, CMTHS offers industry-oriented courses and is dedicated to advancing knowledge, fostering innovation, and promoting sustainable practices in tourism.

Departmental Activities
World Tourism Day
The department organizes several days competitions and cultural events for World Tourism Day every year, with active participation from the university community and beyond.
Guide Training programs
Several 10-days long Guide Training programs were organised at Tehri, Srinagar, and Augustmuni for local youths. Sponsored by the Uttarakhand Tourism Development Board.
Sair Salika
'Sair Salika' programme is an initiative of CMTHS to spread awareness about sustainable living. advocates the philosophy of "We are all travellers on this planet, travel wisely".
Conference & Seminars
The Centre regularly hosts national and international conferences, seminars, and workshops to promote practical interaction between tourism and hospitality sectors and students.
Ganga Guide Initiative
Training workshops for educating guides about sanctity and cleanliness of River Ganga in collaboration with the Uttarakhand Tourism Department and Namami Gange Programme.
